Lost Souls of The Great Lakes
Lost Souls Flyer
(Flyer from first gig)
All of you at one point went to High School, and at one point you had to take American History.  American History that integrated Geography within the curriculum which is an Illinois State Board of Education Standard, regardless of what the governor is going to do, Geography, and Illinois State Geography is still specifically learned, and will continue to be.  Now... this state is a very flat state, one of the flattest in America!  Called the Prairie state.  At one time called by explorers The Great Wasteland, at one point the Great Desert.
But many many years ago there were explorers who came from various countries, in fact one of the countries that we so criticize today, France, was the first country that had the guts to try to find the Northwest Passage.  They explored the cold Canadian Provinces down the St. Lawrence River through a series of lakes that were Erie, Huron, Ontario, Superior and then Lake Michigan.  These lakes were the largest group of fresh water lakes ever discovered on the planet Earth, and they still are to this day.
This region then went from being a desert to being an area known as The Great Lakes Region.  But within this region many people have explored, they have struggled, suffered, they have died.  Their souls still remain within these Great Lakes, they swim around like Chinooks, they swim from one place to another.  That is why this room is called The Chinook Lounge.  That is why when you look out over the waters of Lake Michigan, these fish you don't see, but you know that below the surface there are millions of little fish swimming around and at one time were possibly the souls of your aunts, uncles, your sisters, Jean Baptiste DuSable, other great Chicagoans who lived here, Nelson Algren, that lawyer who was famous in the 1920's who did the Scopes Trial, Clarence Darrow, who had his ashes spread in the lagoon behind the Natural Science Museum. But that lagoon feeds into The Great Lakes, and so this soul eminates from the waters of The Great Lakes, and we experience this soul.
And that is why when we look at the acronym for these five lakes you  look at Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior.  H...O...M...E...S    it spells Homes...IT is our Home...IT'S where OUR soul lives...IT'S what we believe in.
AND TONIGHT---we represent all of the millions of people who struggled to make this city great,
THEY ARE THE LOST SOULS OF THE GREAT LAKES!!!!
